The famous golden triangle is less touristic then I expected. The tiny village along the Mekong river features lots of small souvenir booths offering pretty much the same as everywhere else in Thailand. If you are looking for gemstones and silverware continue driving to the most norther town in Thailand Mae Sai, where you will find tons of jewelry offered at reasonable prices.
Visit Laos legally illegally: Tourguides are offering a boattrip to a "local" market in Laos (bascially just across the river) where you can buy souvenirs at cheap prices. You need no passport, just pay 20 baht per person upon arrival for "Laos tax". Strange but true and definitely worth a visit.
